War Without Winners

The recent unrest in the Middle East has highlighted a region that has continuously experienced chaos and bloodshed for decades. Beginning with the attack by Hamas on the IDF in October of 2023, the situation has quickly evolved into an ongoing conflict, which has resulted in devastation to both Israel and Gaza.

The impact of this conflict has been extensive; thousands of people have died, including many innocent civilians and children, as well as humanitarian workers. Homes, schools, and Hospitals in both Gaza have suffered extensive damage and destruction due to widespread shelling and airstrikes by the IDF. Many people have had to flee their homes on multiple occasions as a result of the violence. Fear and grief have become a part of everyday life for all people living in both areas. Children will feel the emotional impact of this event for many years to come.

Additionally, the conflict has created political unrest and instability within the region. Countries like Iran and Lebanon have been involved in the conflict in the past and continue to do so beyond their borders. Additionally, there are reports of militia activity along the northern border of Israel by groups such as Hezbollah, which have raised concerns for the potential of an expansion of this conflict into a larger version of war. The involvement of the Global Powers of the United States and Russia clearly demonstrate that the International Political System is interconnected with the Conflict in this region.

The economy has been negatively impacted by the war due to loss of trade & tourism, as well as instability throughout the region. Because the Middle East is such an important part of the world energy market, any type of instability occurring in the region can raise prices on oil and create economic problems throughout the world economy. A large number of businesses have closed down, millions of individuals are unemployed, and there's tremendous strain on the humanitarian aid system. The United Nations and other agencies continue to call for ceasefires, as well as additional aid but finding a permanent resolution to the conflict continues to be extremely challenging.

What's happening between Israelis and Palestinians stems from centuries of tensions over politics, borders, security, and suspicion. Each violent act that occurs makes it more difficult to develop solutions that can be agreed upon by both sides. While military action captures headlines, it is the people who live in both areas that ultimately want a safe and secure environment for their children to grow up in and live prosperous lives.

The Israeli/Palestinian conflict affects everyone - not just those living in the region. It challenges the international relationships between countries, impacts economies around the world, and challenges the world’s value system. The current situation highlights the fact that people need to start working positively together through dialogue/compromise in order to solve the issues at hand. If steps are not taken towards a peaceful resolution, future generations will be presented with the same issues.
